Sister City Program

During AMIE’s 2006 Summer Camp, students visited and delivered computers to a school in Chefchaouen, Morocco. Shortly after returning from Morocco, Iman Belali met with the Mayor of the City of Issaquah (USA) and proposed a sister-city connection with Chefchaouen.

Sister-city relationships benefit both communities while fostering human contact and cultural links. Iman’s proposal received support from the Mayors of each city and was approved with a unanimous vote by the Issaquah City Council.

In April 2007, the Mayor of Issaquah, representatives from the City Council and members of the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce traveled to Morocco for a formal sister-city signing ceremony with Chefchaouen's Mayor and the US Ambassador to Morocco.

AMIE is now working with both governments to create a framework for the two cities to achieve closer ties and gain better cultural understanding.
